Course Descriptions

  New Media Toolbox I
This course examines computer-based digital technology and presents basic, creative tools for a variety of new media applications including animation, interactive multimedia, HTML, World Wide Web projects, digital audio software, and an introduction to video art.  Along with these essentials of computer hardware and software and a survey of their creative possibilities, the course explores the cultural significance of art and technology through short readings, discussions and critiques. The goal of this course is to provide the essential conceptual and practical tools for independent work in new media.
  New Media Toolbox II
At this level, the course extends the previously explored possibilities of computer art and consolidates them into the student's own direction. Work becomes more substantial and intricate as projects become more personal and sustained. Further research into interactive media, cultural issues and rethinking interface through electronics and installation will lead to advanced opportunities in multi-media installation and projects for the world wide web. Macromedia Flash, Macromedia Director, Max/MSP and basic electronics will be explored.
  The Fabricated Video Image
This course provides the aesthetics and conceptual framework necessary for video editing, utilizing non-linear techniques, image fabrication and post- production with Final Cut Pro and Adobe After Effects. We will shoot video in a green screen environment and then composite it with other footage to produce an "almost real" segment or piece. Students should have previous video experience either through Photography & New Media's sophomore introduction, NEWME362 New Media Toolbox I or permission of the instructor.
